STORYLINE:
Taiwan organised a drill in the southern city of Tainan on Thursday to test the island’s disaster response capabilities.

It is part of an effort to reinforce Taiwan’s capacity to endure damage, whether from a natural disaster or a possible armed invasion by an enemy.

"We don’t dare not to be prepared. Prevention is better than treatment after all," Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te said on Thursday.

The drill was held by the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee, under the aegis of Taiwan’s presidential office.

The committee was created by Lai’s administration after he was sworn in last year.

It periodically gathers high-ranked administration personnel and specialists for meetings about national-security issues.

During the drill on Thursday, first aid workers pushed a wounded person on a stretcher while medical workers attended to a wounded person in a medical treatment tent.
