STORYLINE:
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot held talks with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on Thursday as he began a two-day visit to China.
During the discussions Barrot and China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, were set to discuss multiple issues including the war in Ukraine and longstanding trade disputes between China and Europe, officials said.
Ahead of the talks, Wang underscored the importance of cooperation between the two countries, calling on both sides to “promote dialogue and cooperation".
On Friday, Barrot will travel to Shanghai for a series of meetings with local officials and business leaders.
France has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its struggle against Russia’s invasion, while Beijing has backed Russia diplomatically and provided an economic lifeline by buying Russian natural resources.
