"It is clear that the former president tried to stage a coup in the country. It is clear from all the evidence that he tried to contribute to my assassination, assassination of the vice president, assassination of the former president of the Brazilian Electoral Court. And everyone knows what happened in this country. There is no point in him now making a fuss, saying that he is being persecuted. He knows what he did, only he knows what he did and he knows that it was not right."

6. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s President:
"He should prove his innocence, because he did not need to ask for amnesty. Prove that he is innocent, and he will go free. That is it. Now, since he has no way of proving that he is innocent, since he has no way of proving that he did not attempt the coup, he keeps trying to provoke the agenda of Brazilian society. I just hope, I just hope that the justice system will do justice."

8. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s President:
"It’s not Bolsonaro, the man, who is being judged. It’s the coup d’état that is being judged, it’s the conduct of this citizen that is being judged. If he is guilty, he has to settle for a punishment, I think. This applies to all 213 million inhabitants. Instead of crying, face the reality and know that you committed an attack against the sovereignty of this country."

STORYLINE:
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Thursday his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro should "prove his innocence" over allegations he attempted to stage a coup after he lost the 2022 election.

A panel of Brazil Supreme Court justices on Wednesday unanimously accepted charges against Bolsonaro over an alleged attempt to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat, and ordered him to stand trial.

Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet has accused Bolsonaro and 33 others of attempting a coup that included a plan to poison his successor and kill a Supreme Court judge.

"He should prove his innocence, because he did not need to ask for amnesty. Prove that he is innocent, and he will go free. That is it," Lula said as he reacted to the news during a visit to Japan on Thursday.

Under Brazilian law, a coup conviction carries a sentence of up to 12 years.

When combined with the other charges, it could result in a sentence of decades behind bars.

Bolsonaro, who has been banned from running for office until 2030 for abuse of power and undermining confidence in the country’s voting system, has denied wrongdoing and claims he is the target of political persecution.

“If I go to jail, I will give you a lot of work,” Bolsonaro said after Wednesday’s Supreme Court’s decision.

While a specific trial date has not been set, the chairman of the Supreme Court panel is expected to outline the procedural framework in the coming days.
