"In other words, the only thing I know is that it will become more expensive for the American people to buy. That’s the only thing I know. And this increase in price could result in an increase in inflation and this inflation target means an increase in interest rates. An increase in interest rates means a containment of the economy."

STORYLINE:
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday questioned the benefit of U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will slap 25% tariffs on auto imports.

"From what I know, the United States imports a lot of Japanese cars and also has a lot of Japanese companies’ production sites. I honestly don’t know what the benefit is of increasing the cars purchased from Japan by 25%," Lula told reporters in Tokyo during his visit to Japan.

"The only thing I know is that it will become more expensive for the American people to buy."

Trump said he was raising duties on auto imports to encourage more manufacturing in the U.S., but the impact will be complicated since U.S. automakers and even foreign manufacturers with factories in the U.S. source many of their components from around the world.

The tax hike starting in April means automakers could face higher costs and lower sales, though Trump argues that the tariffs will lead to more factories opening in the United States and the end of what he judges to be a “ridiculous” supply chain in which auto parts and finished vehicles are manufactured across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
