"it’s really hard to determine whether this theater that we’ve seen over the past couple of days, whether that has been beneficial from the US perspective or not, because we have no idea what the end game is. And our diplomats are frantically trying to figure out what is it that the U.S. wants Greenland to do and Denmark to do. And if he could just tell us, then we would try and accommodate him. But as long as we don’t know what we need to do, it’s really hard to do it. But now, Trump has scared most Greenlanders away from this idea about a close relationship to the United States because they don’t trust him, because they see how he treats Denmark, how he treats Canada, and so on and so forth. And do you really want a friend like that? So in that sense, he has convinced most Greenlanders at the moment that the U.S. is not a viable alternative, and therefore he’s pushed us together inside the current construction. STORYLINE:
U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his wife’s sudden change of itinerary for a planned trip to Greenland is sowing confusion across the island, a Danish professor told the Associated Press on Wednesday, adding that the Trump administration’s pursuit of the territory has scared off many Greenlanders.
“We have no idea what the end game is," said Peter Viggo Jakobsen, associate professor at the Danish Defense Academy.
“Now Trump has scared most Greenlanders away from this idea about a close relationship to the United States because they don’t trust him,” he said in an interview with the AP.
"They see how he treats Denmark, how he treats Canada, and so on and so forth. And do you really want a friend like that?"
The U.S. has not articulated specific demands from Greenland or Denmark at this point.
Greenland and Denmark appeared cautiously relieved early Wednesday by the news that the Vances were changing their itinerary, reducing the likelihood that they will cross paths with residents angered by the Trump administration’s attempts to annex the vast Arctic island, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
The couple will now visit the U.S. Space Force outpost at Pituffik, on the northwest coast of Greenland, instead of Usha Vance’s previously announced solo trip to the Avannaata Qimussersu dogsled race in Sisimiut.
The people of Greenland also have firmly rejected Trump’s plans.
