STORYLINE:
A South Korean appeals court overturned the main opposition party leader’s suspended prison term on Wednesday, acquitting Lee Jae-myung of violating election law by making false statements while denying corruption allegations during a presidential campaign.

Standing outside the Seoul Central District Court, Lee thanked the court and described the case as "ridiculous" and accused the government of wasting national resources.

"The country would be in a better condition if the prosecutors and government used national resources to prevent wildfires and for citizens, instead of fabricating evidence to convict me," Lee added, referring to wind-driven wildfires that have ravaged the south of the country since Friday.

Lee, a firebrand liberal who narrowly lost the 2022 election to conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, is considered a frontrunner for the snap presidential election to be held in the event of the Constitutional Court upholding Yoon’s impeachment, following his botched attempt to impose martial law last year.
