“We used to use 60 liters (of diesel) (24 gallons0 a day (for the engine), but now that there is electricity, we often buy 30 litters (a day) and for the rest of the work we use 10,000 CFA francs ($16) to put in the electricity meter. My wish is to stop using the generator and work only with electricity.”

STORYLINE:
Sitting behind his telephone repair table in Bamako’s Grand Marché, Bourama Doumbia waits impatiently for customers to arrive.

A year ago, his phone repair shop was packed at all hours of the working day, but the power cuts in the Malian capital have disrupted his business, which is now at a standstill.

“Before (last year) we could go for 38 hours without power, but now we have power for a certain period of the day, and I organise myself so that I can get my work done before the power goes off again," he said.
