STORYLINE:
French and Indonesian top diplomats agreed Wednesday to bolster their countries’ ties in maritime security to ensure peace and safety at sea in the Indo-Pacific region amid growing Chinese activity there.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, at a joint news conference after holding talks with his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono, said France will provide to support the Indo-Pacific Port Security Project.
The project aims to address various maritime security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, including piracy, terrorism, and illegal activities at sea, and it likely involves collaboration among countries in the Indo-Pacific to share information, best practices, and resources to enhance port security.
Sugiono, who like many Indonesians uses a single name, said maritime collaboration was important for a stable, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Barrot also said the project will support Indonesia as the world’s largest archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands, particularly in two Indonesian ports in Jakarta and Surabaya cities in their sustainability and security.
As countries bordering the Indian and Pacific Oceans, France and Indonesia regularly work together to contribute to maritime security in the region.
