4. An Education Department worker is greeted on her way out of building
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jaime Jarvis, Consultant:
“I wouldn’t be where I am without amazing teachers who, you know, helped me find myself when I was young. I come from a family of educators, my mom, my aunt, my uncles, every almost everyone in my family were educators in some way. I was in the Peace Corps. I worked as a teacher to start my career. So, I it’s, it’s a human right. I can’t believe we’re tearing it down this way.”
6. Pan from woman holding sign to Education Department workers leaving building
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Rob Petracca, Former Education Department Attorney:
“Yeah. What the Department of Education does, and by the way, it does not tell school districts what to teach, education happens at the state and local level. they have complete control, what the department does is make sure everybody, every student, regardless of their race, whether they’re disability status, they’re LBGT, whether they’re LBGTQ plus or not, gets treated fairly and has an opportunity to succeed. That’s being lost now. And before we had federal involvement in education, students with disabilities basically got nothing. Students who were the wrong color got sent to the worst schools and were denied opportunities. This is the world they want to drag us back to.”
8. Woman holds sign, reads (English): “Thank you”
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Rob Petracca, Former Education Department Attorney:
“If they really want America want America to succeed, if that’s what they really want, undo all the garbage that Elon Musk has done since January 20th. All the canceled grants, all the canceled contracts, restore them and hire back everyone he’s fired. If you really want to make America great, that’s what you do. You treat your civil servants fairly and you should bring them back.”
10. US Education Department worker hugged by others after leaving building
STORYLINE:
Some US Department of Education workers cleared out their offices and left for the last time on Monday.
This follows President Donald Trump signing an executive order last Thursday calling for a plan to shut down of the Education Department, an agency Republicans have talked about closing for decades.
Other Education Department employees and supporters waited outside to cheer on the workers as they made their final exit.
Jaime Jarvis, a consultant, said she wouldn’t be where she was in life without teachers.
“I come from a family of educators, my mom, my aunt, my uncles, every almost everyone in my family were educators in some way. I was in the Peace Corps. I worked as a teacher to start my career. So, I it’s, it’s a human right. I can’t believe we’re tearing it down this way,” Jarvis said.
Ron Petracca, who was an attorney with the US Department of Education for nearly 45 years, said he is concerned about going backward in education with the dismantling of the department.
Eliminating the department altogether would be a cumbersome task, which likely would require an act of Congress.
