2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Warbelow, Human Rights Campaign:
"We are seeking out a preliminary injunction which would block the Trump administration from kicking out transgender people from the military and refusing to consider folks who are transgender from service in the future."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sasha Buchert, Lambda Legal:
"Well, the court, you know, listened to both sides and clarified at the end of the decision that he is a fair and impartial adjudicator and he’s going to take his time and deliberate. I don’t think there were any clear signs that the judge is going to rule in one way or the other."
5. Tight of court sign
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sasha Buchert, Lambda Legal:
"Our plaintiffs alone who’ve served for, you know, almost 100 years in the military. They’ve made every service based standard that is applicable to service members. You know, they they can do with the right number of pull ups. They can do the right amount of push ups. They can shoot straight. They can meet every generally applicable requirement. Yet they’re being told that they have to, they’re being told that they have to leave the military simply because of who they are. And that’s just simply discrimination."
7. Attorneys and plaintiff leaving press availability
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Warbelow, Human Rights Campaign:
"So there are individuals who are under pressure to make considerations about their future. But the military has not yet begun the process of formally separating anyone. They intend to do so shortly in the absence of a preliminary injunction."

STORYLINE:
A U.S. judge in Washington state heard arguments Tuesday on whether to block enforcement of President Donald Trump’s order banning transgender people from serving in the military.
The arguments before U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin Settle in Tacoma came in a case brought by several long-serving transgender military members who the ban is insulting and discriminatory. They say their firing would cause lasting damage to their careers and reputations.
They include U.S. Navy Cmdr. Emily “Hawking” Shilling, a 42-year-old woman who has served for more than 19 years, who has flown more than 60 missions as a combat aviator.
A Justice Department lawyer argued that the president was entitled to deference in military affairs. The judge peppered him with questions, noting that the government had offered no evidence that allowing transgender troops to serve openly has caused any problems for
military readiness.
Settle said he will rule by 5 p.m. Thursday.
