“We have exchanges with the clock restorers of other countries. After communicating with them, we bought advanced equipment from overseas. The equipment improved the accuracy and efficiency of our restoration work. Especially with 3D scanning, we can scan each critical part of the clocks and accumulate the data for study. This work will provide technical support for making replicas in the future.”

“Sometimes we choose traditional glues. In most of the cases we would consider the fragility and strength of a piece of an antique, so we don’t use modern glues very often. Our principle and our goal is to better protect the antiques.”

“I will first scrape the edges of the holes. Then I cut out the shapes of the holes from this paper. When I fit the patch into the holes, the edge needs to be smoothed out. You can see the patch paper is thinner than the painting paper. The painting paper has five layers, so I need to apply another layer and even more so the patch can be as thick as the painting paper.”

“We have repaired the backing of this silk panel, and we are now fixing the damage on the front. We need to add colours to the front where the patches are, so the patches don’t stand out. This step is called “inpainting”.”
