STORYLINE:
Acting South Korean President Han Duck-soo pledged on Monday to focus on the "national interest" after the country’s Constitutional Court overturned his impeachment.

Referring to the U.S. Trump administration’s tariffs policy, Han told reporters "safeguarding" South Korea’s interests would be a priority.

"With the inauguration of U.S President (Donald) Trump, the U.S-China power struggle has been intensified, and we are facing great geopolitical change and reorganization of the economic order," he said.

Han became acting president after the separate impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his imposition of martial law.

But Han was impeached by the liberal opposition-controlled National Assembly as well in late December following political strife with opposition lawmakers.

The unprecedented, successive impeachments that suspended the country’s top two officials intensified a domestic division and deepened worries about the country’s diplomatic and economic activities.

The deputy prime minister and finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, had since been serving as acting president.

On Monday, seven of the court’s eight justices overturned or dismissed Han’s impeachment.
