“We also hope that entrepreneurs can play a unique role in maintaining economic globalization and be more proactive in this regard. Enterprises are beneficiaries of globalization, therefore should be staunch defenders and promoters of globalization. The power of a single enterprise may be limited, but if we unite and be banded together like strands of a rope, we can form a powerful joint force.”

STORYLINE:
Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Sunday that the country’s economy may face “unexpected shocks” this year "mainly from the external factors".

“When necessary, the Chinese government will introduce new incremental policies to ensure the smooth operation of the Chinese economy,“ Li said in Beijing.

Li made the remarks during a keynote speech at the opening of China Development Forum, a government sponsored event inviting senior officials and business leaders.

The Chinese government unveiled an annual economic growth target of “around 5%” earlier in March during the national congress session, despite the possible negative impact of a looming trade war with the United States.

It’s the same as for the last two years but will likely be more difficult to achieve because of the new, higher U.S. tariffs on Chinese products and other economic headwinds.

“In today’s world, economic fragmentation is intensifying, and instability and uncertainty are on the rise,” Li told hundreds of officials, business leaders and international organization representatives.

He called for all countries to open up markets, and all enterprises to share resources.

Across-the-board 20% tariffs imposed this week on Chinese products by U.S. President Donald Trump pose the latest threat to an economy already weighed down by a prolonged real estate slump and sluggish consumer spending and private business investment.

The tariffs could crimp sales to one of China’s major export markets, making the need to boost domestic demand more urgent.
