STORYLINE:
Tennesseans upset over changes to the U.S. Social Security program brought their concerns to a congressman’s office, the day after he announced a run for governor.
A group brought signs and chants to protect the federal retirement, disability and survivor benefits program on Friday to U.S. Rep. John Rose’s office in Gallatin, Tennessee.
The Republican announced on Thursday his candidacy for Tennessee governor in 2026.
The group met with a representative for the congressman and argued that Rose wasn’t doing enough to protect Social Security from plans made by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to shrink the size of the federal government.
"And our representative is not doing anything about it. He needs some spine," said Pat Collins.
"These people are citizens and they’re rightly afraid of losing their benefits," said Gallatin resident Henry DeGroot.
"We’re getting tired of not being listened to and that we’re all here to make sure that everyone understands that Social Security, millions of people depend on it."
