STORYLINE:
Foreign ministers from Japan and its two neighboring Asian powers China and South Korea held a meeting Saturday to seek common ground on areas like low birth rates, natural disasters and cultural exchanges at a time of growing tensions.

The meeting on Saturday focuses on plans for a trilateral summit later this year.

After meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and South Korea’s Cho Tae-yul, China’s Wang Yi told reporters the three countries agreed that they have to strengthen their communication, mutual trust and cooperation to "provide more stable factors" for regional peace in the face of changes and turbulence in the international landscape.

He said the countries will talk about the latest technological revolution and industrial transformation and build a highland for technology and innovation in Asia.

Wang said the current situation of the Korean Peninsula is complex and sensitive, with increasing factors of instability, and they were willing to work with the international community to promote political solutions to the issue and achieve lasting peace in northeast Asia.
