2. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
“We of course, understandably, are once again focused on the situation in Ukraine. Russia’s war of aggression continues with a great degree of brutality, and it is therefore very important that during our discussions with President Zelenskyy today, we made it very clear that the European Union and I want to be very clear: 26 of the member states have made it clear that they are on the side of Ukraine, that Ukraine can continue to rely on them, that we will not abandon them.”

4. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor:
“Europe is strong in economic terms, the biggest economic area in the world with regard to its economic strength. And it is on that basis that we ought to act, I believe. Which means that we should keep calm and keep a level head. That we should not allow others to scare us, and that we should focus on the objective of avoiding a wave of protectionism, which would damage the world’s economy and might lead to an economic depression for years to come, globally, in the United States, but also elsewhere.”

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday that Ukraine can continue to expect support from its European partners.
"The European Union and I want to be very clear: 26 of the member states have made it clear that they are on the side of Ukraine, that Ukraine can continue to rely on them, that we will not abandon them," Scholz told reporters, speaking after an EU summit in Brussels.
Scholz said that it’s “central” that Ukraine should remain an independent democratic nation that can continue its journey toward EU membership.
Earlier, Scholz’s EU counterparts — with the exception of Hungary, which opposes the bloc’s “peace through strength” stance — called on member countries “to urgently step up efforts to address Ukraine’s pressing military and defence needs.”
The German parliament’s budget committee is expected to decide Friday to clear up to 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) in extra funding for German military aid to Ukraine this year.
That comes after parliament voted to loosen Germany’s debt rules for military and security spending.
Commenting on tariffs imposed on Europe by US President Donald Trump, Scholz said Europe should "keep calm and keep a level head."
"We should focus on the objective of avoiding a wave of protectionism," which he said only damages the world economy.
