"The convicted men, Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, were identified as Russian mobsters. Alinejad was targeted for her online activism encouraging Iranian women to share videos defying government mandates and showing their hair uncovered. Prosecutors said Iran offered $500,000 for her killing in July 2022 after earlier harassment attempts failed. U.S. officials accused Iran of backing multiple assassination plots in America, including one targeting former President Donald Trump. Tehran denied involvement. At trial, former mobster Khalid Mehdiyev testified he was hired to kill Alinejad and bought an AK-47 rifle for the job. Mehdiyev was arrested after police found the gun during a traffic stop in July 2022."

"In October they announced charges against a senior Iranian military official and three others, none of whom are in custody. Meanwhile when the verdict came in, Ms. Alinejad was act home. She said she reacted by crying and she said later she laughed and even danced. She issued a statement saying ‘she’s relieved that after nearly three years, the men who plotted to kill me have been found guilty. But make no mistake, the real masterminds of this crime are still in power in Iran.’”

STORYLINE:
A jury has convicted two men of plotting to assassinate Iranian American journalist Masih Alinejad at her home in New York City.
Prosecutors say it involved a murder-for-hire scheme financed by the Iranian government.
The verdict was returned in a court in New York on Thursday.
It ended a two-week trial that featured dramatic testimony from a hired gunman and from Alinejad.
Prosecutors say Iran offered $500,000 for the killing.
The hitman cooperated with prosecutors after he was arrested.
He told the jury that he bought an AK-47 to kill Alinejad but the plan was foiled when his car was stopped by police and the gun was found in the back seat.
