STORYLINE:
Faculty members at the University of California, Berkeley, gathered for a demonstration on campus, protesting the Trump administration’s recent threats to cut federal funding for universities that fail to address antisemitism.

This demonstration comes in the wake of the administration’s decision to pull $400 million in federal funds from Columbia University, citing the school’s inadequate response to alleged antisemitism on its campus.

The Trump administration’s move follows a series of actions taken against Columbia University after federal agencies accused the Ivy League institution of failing to adequately address antisemitic behavior, particularly in relation to student protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict.

At UC Berkeley, which has also faced scrutiny for its handling of student protests, faculty members voiced concern that similar funding cuts could soon be imposed.

The protest at Berkeley is part of a broader national debate over free speech, campus activism, and the role of universities in addressing complex political issues.

Some faculty members worry that the administration’s actions could have a chilling effect on free expression at universities across the country.
