"Israel has renewed its offensive in the Gaza Strip, ending the ceasefire and launching a wave of strikes this week that killed hundreds of Palestinians. This new offensive could be even more devastating than the last one as Israel is operating under far fewer constraints. The Trump administration has voiced full support for Israel’s actions, which include the renewed offensive and the decision earlier this month to seal off Gaza from all food, fuel and humanitarian aid. Trump has gone even further, suggesting that Gaza’s entire population, some 2 million Palestinians, should be resettled in other countries. Hamas is weaker and more isolated than it’s been at any point in the war. Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which traded fire with Israel during the first year of the war, was forced to accept a ceasefire after most of its leaders were killed in Israeli strikes last year. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have renewed their missile strikes on Israel but their military capabilities are very limited. Israel seems to be fully aware of the changed context. Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said in a statement Wednesday that if Hamas does not release all the hostages and leave Gaza entirely, then Palestinians can expect quote "complete destruction and devastation".

STORYLINE:
Israeli strikes killed at least 85 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip overnight and into Thursday, according to local health officials.

Hours later, Hamas fired three rockets at Israel without causing casualties, in the first such attack since Israel ended their ceasefire with a surprise bombardment of Gaza on Tuesday.

The Israeli military ordered people to evacuate an area in central Gaza near Khan Younis, saying it would operate there in response to rocket fire from Hamas.

Israel blamed the renewed fighting on Hamas because the militant group rejected a new proposal that departed from their signed agreement.

The Trump administration, which took credit for helping to broker the ceasefire, has voiced full support for Israel.

More than 400 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday alone, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The Iranian-backed Houthis resumed attacks on Israel this week following the collapse of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

However, the militant group is at its weakest since the start of the war as one of its important allies, Lebanese Hezbollah, has suffered major losses.
