More than 1,100 people arrested in Turkey during five days of protests | BBC News

The Turkish government has said more than 1,100 people have been arrested in five days of protests across the country.

It said people have been "abusing" the right to protest, and warns that "terrorising the streets" will not be tolerated

Protests began when Istanbul’s Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, an opponent of President Erdogan, was detained on Wednesday on corruption charges.

Imamoglu said the charges were politically motivated, something President Erdogan denies.
