"Masih Alinejad came to Manhattan federal court today to testify against two men who are accused of plotting to assassinate her. She spoke from the witness stand for over two hours, answering prosecutors questions about what caused her to leave Iran in 2009. She said the Iranian government was cracking down on journalists. She was a journalist there and they weren’t letting her ever show her hair. She came to the United States. She began a campaign to encourage women in Iran to show their hair and shoot videos of it and correspond with her. And women started getting arrested there for showing their hair. But the movement kept growing. And finally, she says she found herself talking to the FBI and having to be moved from her Brooklyn apartment because the threat of assassination was too great."

STORYLINE:
A charismatic journalist from Iran who prosecutors say was targeted by her former homeland’s government for assassination has testified at the trial of two men accused in the plot.

Masih Alinejad told a Manhattan federal court jury Tuesday that she was subjected to a barrage of insults and threats after she launched online campaigns from the United States to encourage women to rebel against Iran’s religious edicts requiring that they keep their hair covered.

She says she was eventually forced to leave her Brooklyn apartment in July 2022 after the FBI revealed that she was targeted. Prosecutors say Iran’s government was behind the assassination plot.
