STORYLINE:
On Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of people from the Chilean Palestinian community and supporters gathered in front of the United States embassy in Santiago, Chile, in a demonstration called on social media to protest Israel’s recent airstrikes in Gaza.
Chile is home to the largest community of Palestinians in the world outside of the Arab countries, with great influence among the high social, economic and political spheres of the country, which brings together approximately 500,000 Palestinians.
In a press release, the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its “consternation and condemnation of Israel’s brutal attack against the civilian population of Gaza.”
In the statement, it stated that “This aggression constitutes a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, which has been in force since January 19, as well as of the most basic norms of international humanitarian law.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the strikes after Hamas refused Israeli demands to free half of the remaining hostages as a precondition for extending the ceasefire. Israel’s deadliest bombardment of the territory in the 17-month war killed mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Netanyahu said the attack was “only the beginning” and that Israel would press ahead until it achieves all of its war aims — destroying Hamas and freeing all hostages held by the militant group.
The Chilean government called for “an urgent ceasefire, to respect the agreement that allows for the release of kidnapped Israelis, as well as Palestinian political prisoners, and to resume the dialogue process for a lasting peace.”
