3. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"Current events, of course, force me to focus on Gaza. Like His Majesty, we have never stopped working for a ceasefire. And the resumption of Israeli strikes yesterday, despite the efforts of mediators, is a dramatic step backwards. Dramatic for the Palestinians of Gaza, once again plunged into the terror of bombardments, dramatic for the hostages and their families who live in the nightmare of waiting and uncertainty for a release that we hope for more than anything, dramatic for the whole region which is trying to recover after more than a year of war and upheaval. Hostilities must stop immediately, and negotiations must resume in good faith under US auspices to whom we owe this first ceasefire.”

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday the resumption of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip was a "dramatic step backwards."
Speaking at a news briefing in Paris after talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Macron said the developments were negative for the Palestinian people, Israeli hostages still in Gaza and the wider Middle East.
The French president called for an immediate end to the hostilities and a return to negotiations.
The relative calm of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came to an abrupt end on Tuesday when Israel launched dozens of attacks on targets across the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian medical officials say more than 400 people have been killed, mostly women and children.
Israel says the operation is open-ended and expected to expand, raising fears of the 17-month-old war fully reigniting.
During their talks, Macron and Abdullah also discussed the need for allowing humanitarian aid to get into Gaza as well as restoring access to water and electricity, Macron’s office said.
