“The fact of being up here is very different, really very different. I’m used to cycling on the streets. I ride all over São Paulo and do 40-50 km on a weekend, but being up here, standing still, watching and enjoying what’s happening is really cool.”

STORYLINE:
The Brazilian metropolis with the biggest helicopter fleet in the world has found a new use for its dozens of helipads — outdoor spin classes.
Such workouts are traditionally set indoors to burn hundreds of calories with high-intensity cardio, but in Sao Paulo, there’s thousands of people seeking that format for wellness and an experience that might lead them to jump start in regular training.
Sao Paulo, with nearly 12 million residents, is also noisy from high up, so attendees wear headphones so they can hear the instructors.
Those who have fear of heights have added adrenaline as some helipads have no guard rails in the extremities.
Fitness coach Rodrigo Gusman had the idea during the pandemic, when most of his classes took place on video conferencing tool Zoom.
He also did it at a kids’ buffet, a skating ring, a circus, and a pet shop, but helipads worked better than anything else.
Since 2021, he has held it in seven different helicopter landing sites, all with a panoramic view of the giant city.
“Actually, it’s a very different experience because of the view, and besides, everyone has the desire to go up on a helipad,” Gusman said on Tuesday on the helipad of the Pestana Hotel in downtown Sao Paulo, where he was giving out classes to a clients.
More than 2,000 people are on the waiting list for a similar event in May, with only 360 spin bikes available.
Gusman said it costs him about 50,000 Brazilian reais ($9,000) to organize each of his experiences, which includes other coaches, a music DJ and a producer.
“I am used to cycling on the streets of Sao Paulo, I do 40, 50 kilometers every weekend. To be on the top and still, watching and enjoying what is happening below is so cool,” said Karina Conrado, a manager at the local office of a French sporting goods brand that sponsored the event.
Due to its heavy traffic, Sao Paulo has a fleet of more than 500 helicopters registered and and more than 30 landing sites available, according to the Brazilian National Aviation Agency,
Local authorities say about 700 flights take place in the metropolis every day.
Some of the helipads that Gusman uses in his classes are currently idle.
Classes are usually 50 minutes long, if Brazil’s warm temperatures allow.
Tickets cost about 200 Brazilian reais ($35), with women making up between 60 and 70% of the public in every event.
