A court in Istanbul has placed the city mayor and a key political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan under formal arrest. Ekrem Imamoglu will remain in custody pending trial on corruption charges.
Imamoglu was detained earlier this week in a raid on his residence, triggering the largest anti-government demonstrations in Turkey in more than a decade. Opponents of President Erdogan accuse him of trying to remove a major contender in the 2028 presidential election. Government officials reject the accusations. In a separate ruling, the court temporarily released him from terrorism charges pending a further investigation. DW’s Dorian Jones reports from Istanbul.
