STORYLINE:
University students in the North Macedonian capital of Skopje paid their respects on Tuesday to the victims of a fire at a nightclub over the weekend.
The students stood inside a campus in silence and lit candles in memory of the 59 people killed in Sunday’s nightclub inferno in the eastern town of Kocani.
A further 155 others were injured in the fire, sparked by stage pyrotechnics during a live concert.
North Macedonia authorities were investigating allegations of bribery surrounding the fire in the club, which was crammed with young revellers and at double capacity.
Kocani’s mayor resigned Monday over the emerging scandal.
Silent protests against corruption were held Monday in Kocani, joined by thousands of residents and separately by university students in Skopje.
Officials said 10 people remain in police custody for questioning in Kocani, some 115 kilometers (72 miles) east of the capital, Skopje.
