STORYLINE:
Residents and work crews in the South and Midwest are beginning to clean up and survey the destruction from a three-day outbreak of severe weather.
The outbreak across eight states kicked up a devastating combination of wildfires, dust storms and tornadoes, claiming at least 42 lives since Friday.
Two people were killed by a twister in Atchison’s tiny Alabama hometown of Plantersville.
Dallas County Sheriff’s Department Chief John Hatfield said everybody in the community that small knows everybody. Everybody speaks to each other daily. It’s a very close-knit community.
"The whole community is just devastated," said Hatfield.
