“We are in full agreement that the goal of all efforts must be a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. The announced ceasefire for attacks on the energy infrastructure can be an important first step on the way. The same applies to the start of technical negotiations for a ceasefire at sea. The next step must be a complete ceasefire for Ukraine and as quickly as possible.”

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Olaf Scholz, outgoing German Chancellor:
"We are deeply concerned about the civilian casualties in Gaza now that fighting has resumed there. Our particular concern in Germany is of course for the remaining hostages. This is also the case in France, and the largest group among them are German-Israeli dual nationals. My clear call to Hamas remains – finally release the hostages! It is important to talk about the political future of the Gaza Strip as a whole. The Arab League’s plan offers a good basis for this.”

9. SOUNDBITE (French) Emanuel Macron, French President:

"The first steps are being put in place, but the objective must remain the same, a ceasefire which is measurable and verifiable, fully respected. STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Macron welcome the planned ceasefire for attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine as a "first important step" for peace.
"The next step must be a complete ceasefire for Ukraine and as quickly as possible," said Scholz, speaking in Berlin alongside Macron.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously agreed to the proposal of a partial and phased ceasefire in talks with US President Donald Trump.
According to the proposal, attacks on infrastructure should initially be halted for 30 days.
Negotiations on a ceasefire in the Black Sea are also planned.
"The goal of all endeavors must be a just and lasting peace for Ukraine," said Scholz.
Macron also emphasized that initial steps were being taken, but that the goal must remain the same: "To have a measurable and verifiable ceasefire that is fully respected, to initiate detailed and complete peace talks that make it possible to have a solid and lasting peace and the guarantees that go with it.’
The French President added that it was essential that Ukraine should be involved in the talks.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Scholz called Hamas once more to release the remaining hostages.
