STORYLINE:
The mothers of hostages held in Gaza feared for their children’s safety after Israel launched a barrage of surprise strikes early Tuesday.
When the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began two months ago, Herut Nimrodi knew it would take time before her son was released from captivity in Gaza.
The now 20-year-old soldier was meant to be part of the second phase of the deal to wind down the months-long war.
"I’m very, very scared and very frustrated of what’s going on and have no idea what is going to be next", she told the Associated Press
Protesting at the Israel-Gaza border, Einav Zangauker called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to work for the release of her son Matan Zangauker.
Hamas is believed to be holding 24 living hostages and the bodies of 35 others.
The Israeli strikes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan could signal the full resumption of a war that has already killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and caused widespread destruction across Gaza.
It also raised concerns about the fate of the roughly two dozen Israeli hostages held by Hamas who are believed to still be alive.
