5. SOUNDBITE (English) Josef Federman, The Associated Press:
"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he ordered these strikes because he says Hamas is not serious about negotiating a long-term ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas of course denies these allegations. It blames Israel for the impasse. The two sides have been deadlocked since the first phase of their ceasefire expired early this month. Hamas wants to see a full withdrawal of Israeli troops, an end to the war. Israel wants to see the release of all remaining hostages inside Gaza. It also wants to see Hamas give up power."

"Now there may be other factors at play. Netanyahu has a deadline by the end of this month he needs to pass a new budget. If he does not do so, the country would be plunged into early elections and that could force him out of office. By renewing this operation he has shored up the support of his hardline governing partners that improves the odds of passing this budget."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Josef Federman, The Associated Press:
"The renewal of violence means more difficulties for Gaza’s civilian population. Hundreds of thousands of people after nearly a year and a half of war, hundreds of thousands of people remain homeless living in very difficult conditions. In Israel, this means more uncertainty for roughly 60 Israeli families of hostages still held in Gaza."
