STORYLINE:
St. Patrick’s Day, the annual celebration of all things Irish, was marked across the United States on Monday with boisterous parades and festivities.

Major celebrations also kicked off Monday morning in several big cities, including Savannah, Georgia, and other American communities, though some of the cities most transformed by Irish immigration held festivities over the weekend.

""You know the thing about Savannah and its parade is that it’s been, number one it’s been going on for 200 years and number two, and the committee has always emphasized that it is about family and faith and not so much of a big party time, but we really emphasize the fact that it’s family based and it’s faith based," said Sean Finnegan, a Savannah resident who serves on the committee hosting the city’s festivities.

Festivities on March 17 were popularized by Irish immigrant communities, who in the 19th century faced discrimination and opposition in the U.S.

The parades are meant to commemorate Ireland’s patron saint but have become a celebration of Irish heritage globally.
