STORYLINE:
New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday he wanted to ensure his country worked with France and the rest of Europe to maintain "the most positive possible relations" with the United States.
Carney was speaking at joint news conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Stressing that Canada was "the most European of non-European countries," Carney said Canada was a "reliable, trustworthy and strong partner of France."
Carney arrived in Paris Monday to meet with Macron, seeking support from one of Canada’s oldest allies as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to attack Canada’s sovereignty and economy.
This is Carney’s first official foreign trip since he was sworn in on March 14.
He will next land in London where he will sit down with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III, the head of state in Canada.
