STORYLINE:
A charity kitchen run from a historic mosque in Iraq’s Sulaymaniyah city is providing meals to thousands of people every day during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
The Sulaymaniyah Grand Mosque hands out meals to anyone who needs them throughout the year, but the mosque’s charity kitchen expands its activity during Ramadan.
"Since the very beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, we have been serving 2,000 to 2,500 meals every day," said Mohammed Salar, the supervisor in charge of preparing Ramadan meals inside the mosque.
The kitchen, run by volunteers, is funded by charitable businessmen and wealthy people in the city.
On a recent day, the kitchen staff cooked 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of rice, 90 kilograms (198 pounds) of beans, and 650 kilograms (1433 pounds) of chicken, Salar said.
For the next day, they were planning on preparing similar quantities of beans and rice, but to cook 700 kilograms (1,543 pounds) of meat instead of the chicken.
Charity and a spirit of giving are hallmarks of Ramadan.
