STORYLINE:
Stars of Asian cinema walked the red carpet at the 18th annual Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong on Sunday.
A total of 30 films from 25 countries and regions are spanning 16 competitive categories.
Acclaimed Chinese actress Tong Wei are being honored with the Excellence in Asian Cinema Award at the event for her contribution in the Asian movie industry.
The winners are decided by a panel of juries presided by Hong Kong veteran martial arts actor and director Sammo Hung.
South Korean supernatural thriller “Exhuma” has earned 11 nominations, making it the most nominated film this year, competing in Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The movie is a mega-hit at the Korean box office.
Hong Kong action movie “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” is the second-most feted film with nine nominations. It has nominations in categories including Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music and more.
India’s “All We Imagine as Light” directed by Payal Kapadia and the winner of Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prix scores six nominations. Japan’s “Teki Cometh” has received six nominations.
The Rising Star Award goes to Japan’s artist Kōki for her potential talent in the film industry.
Popular Thai star Wim Metawin and famous Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-ren also made their appearance at the red carpet.
This year’s award also features a few special ambassadors including Japanese actor and singer-songwriter Dean Fujioka, Thai actress Aokbab Chutimon and Taiwanese actor Austin Lin.
The Asian Film Awards is honoured by the Asian Film Awards Academy, which is supported by the region’s three prestigious movie festivals including South Korea’s Busan International Film Festival, Japan’s Tokyo International Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival.
It aims to promote and recognize Asian films and talents.
