LEADIN:
For the millions of people now marking Ramadan it’s a period of deep reflection, prayer, and self-discipline, but it’s also a time to show generosity and compassion.
In Lagos, Nigeria’s biggest city, economic hardship means more people than ever are relying on the kindness of neighbours during the holy month.
STORYLINE:
At the back of a restaurant in Lagos a lamb is being butchered for iftar – the meal eaten by practising Muslims during Ramadan to break their fast at sunrise.
During the holy month of Ramadan the faithful observe the requirement to fast between sunrise and sunset.
But increasingly hard economic conditions here in Nigeria’s largest city, means many families don’t even have a simple meal to break their fast.
Her contribution is especially important this year with food prices soaring.
