The ongoing situation is very worrying."

"It’s clear, it’s a historic visit. A historic visit to see religious clerics visiting a holy place, a religious place, prayers. I hope this can show the whole world that just as it is right for Muslims to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, and for Christians to come to Jerusalem and other places, it is right for the Druze to come."

STORYLINE:
The spiritual leader of the Druze in Israel on Saturday called for Syria’s new government to represent all minorities.

“The ongoing situation is very worrying,” said Sheikh Mowafaq during a visit by Syrian Druze to the Nabi Shuaib shrine compound in northern Israel.

Tarif said he hope the new government "will represent all citizens of Syria, with the participation of all minorities, not just fundamentalists and jihadists, so that it becomes a state for all its people.”

Dozens of clerics and others from Syria’s minority Druze community crossed into the Israeli-controlled side of the Golan Heights on Friday for the first time in decades, and later moved to visit the shrine compound.

The nearly 100 Syrian Druze crossed the heavily-fortified border area in three buses, escorted by members of the Israeli military.

The Druze are one of the Middle East’s most insular religious sects, beginning as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam.

Most Druze religious practices are shrouded in secrecy, with outsiders not allowed to convert.
