STORYLINE:
A crude oil pipeline crack caused a thick oil slick in the Viche River in northwestern Ecuador.
Employees of the state oil company Petroecuador were trying Saturday to contain the oil slick in the river that affected the area of Viche in the province of Esmeraldas.
The spill was caused by the rupture of a section of the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System when a landslide triggered by heavy rains affected the area, according to an official report.
Petroecuador said that more than fifty workers are working to clean up the area using excavators, tanks, and suction and containment pumps.
The presence of the hydrocarbon turned black a large area known for its coffee and cocoa plantations.
The local water company reported it was suspending service in the affected areas due to the danger of contaminating its drinking water system.
According to Petroecuador figures, the damaged pipeline transports 275,000 barrels per day.
Oil is the country’s main export product and the primary income source for the fiscal coffers.
