An autonomous bus has been tested on the streets of Barcelona.
The Renault vehicle navigated a short route of just over 2 kilometres around the city centre.
STORYLINE:
Going by bus seems like a standard way to get around Barcelona.
But this one doesn’t have a driver.
Renault’s driverless ‘bus of the future’ has been tested in the Spanish city this week.
The autonomous vehicle has been running on a 2.2km circular route with four stops in the city centre.
The French car maker unveiled the driverless bus at the French Open venue last year, but now it is testing it on the open road.
It is also doing testing in Valence in France and at Zurich airport.
The bus pulls away from the stop with its passengers, brakes before changing lanes, and eases down one of Barcelona’s most fashionable boulevards – all without a human at the wheel.
Pau Cugat is one of the curious to step aboard for a short ride along Passeig de Gracia boulevard.
“Each passing day we are more and more into the future. Right before this one I saw a regular combustion bus and I thought to myself ‘you have the bus of the past, and right behind it you have the bus of the future’,” he says.
