3. SOUNDBITE (English) Mohamed Mohamed Elmi Afrah, Somali politician:
"As a Somali politician, I don’t think that proposal will get support because of the circumstances surrounding this issue. So we have heard that it is in the mainstream media and already we know the immediate reaction that came from neighbouring Arab countries, frontline Arab countries of Palestinians, like Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the like. Ok, in my opinion, as an independent Somali politician, I don’t think that it will get the unanimous support of the Somali people, be it people, the population or the government.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Samiya Gadiid, local resident:
"The U.S. and Israel are very wrong in their decision. The same people that they killed and displaced, they now want to force them to move to another country and bring them here to Somalia. That is unacceptable because we are already suffering from civil conflict and unrest."

8. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Osman Adan, local resident:
"I would urge everyone to unite to defend Palestinian land. The U.S. is using an outdated policy and that is unacceptable for us. Therefore, I would say that all Muslims should unite and be vigilant against this threat."

10. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Hanad Abdisalam, local resident:
"I find (U.S.) President (Donald) Trump’s proposal to resettle the people of Gaza unfeasible. Even children should not entertain such a plan. This reflects Trump’s simplistic thinking and I doubt the Palestinians will accept it, as Palestine is their homeland. There is no place better than their own country. If they are forced to leave, the responsibility will rest with every Muslim, who will stand in defence of the Palestinians."

STORYLINE:
Locals in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu rejected Friday a proposal of resettling Palestinians from Gaza in Somalia.
"In my opinion, as an independent Somali politician, I don’t think that it will get the unanimous support of the Somali people, be it people, the population or the government," said politician Mohamed Mohamed Elmi Afrah.
"The same people that they killed and displaced, they now want to force them to move to another country and bring them here to Somalia," added local resident Samiya Gadiid, regarding the U.S. and Israeli suggestion.
"I would urge everyone to unite to defend Palestinian land," said another local, Osman Adan.
The U.S. and Israel have reached out to officials of three East African governments to discuss using their territories as potential destinations for moving Palestinians uprooted from the Gaza Strip under President Donald Trump’s proposed postwar plan, American and Israeli officials told The Associated Press.
The contacts with Sudan, Somalia and the breakaway region of Somalia known as Somaliland reflect the determination by the U.S. and Israel to press ahead with a plan that has been widely condemned and raised serious legal and moral issues.
Because all three places are poor, and in some cases wracked by violence, the proposal also casts doubt on U.S. President Donald Trump’s stated goal of resettling Gaza’s Palestinians in a “beautiful area.”
Under Trump’s plan, Gaza’s more than 2 million people would be permanently sent elsewhere.
