STORYLINE:
Senior officials from China, Russia and Iran gathered in Beijing on Friday to discuss Iran’s nuclear program.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted a trilateral meeting with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov Sergey Alexeevich and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
The meeting comes after U.S. President Donald Trump wrote to Iran’s supreme leader to jump-start talks on Iran’s advancing nuclear program.
China, Iran and Russia conducted joint naval drills on Tuesday in the Middle East, offering a show of force in a region still uneasy over Tehran’s rapidly expanding nuclear program and as Yemen’s Houthi rebels threaten new attacks on ships.
The drill marked the fifth year the three countries took part in the drills.
