STORYLINE:
Multiple lights were aimed at the Gaza Strip on Wednesday from the house where Israeli twin brothers Gali and Ziv Berman were seized by Palestinian militants during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack.
Family and friends of the brothers gathered outside the home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, expressing hope that the
twins would see the beams light up the night sky from wherever they were being held.
Last month, the family of the Bermans received signs of life for the first time since the 27-year-olds were taken.
A new round of ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas started Tuesday.
Israel wants Hamas to release half of the remaining hostages in return for a promise to negotiate a lasting truce.
The militant group, however, wants to start negotiations on the ceasefire’s more difficult second phase, in which the remaining hostages would be released and Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza.
Hamas is believed to have 24 living hostages and the bodies of 35 others.
Israel is trying to force Hamas to accept its plan by cutting off all electricity, food, medicine and other goods to Gaza’s more than 2 million Palestinians.
The United Nations and other humanitarian aid providers say Israel is violating international law.
