STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said on Thursday that Putin will meet U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in the Kremlin.
Ushakov said the Russian leader will invite Witkoff, who arrived earlier on Thursday, when he is ready for talks.
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy arrived in Russia for talks on a ceasefire, which Ukraine has accepted.
Ushakov added that Russia is interested in discussing broad cooperation with the U.S., but Washington wants first to settle the conflict in Ukraine.
Putin said earlier that he agrees in principle with a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, but the terms need to be worked out, and he emphasized that it should pave the way to lasting peace.
