2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Newman, Laid off U.S. Department of Education employee:
"It’s really painful. Scary. It feels pretty unjust to not be given a reason for you know, kind of why. You know, one of the recent exercises was to provide statutory basis for the work we do, and there’s plenty of that. So, you know, it’s unclear why disbanding organizational units such as mine was necessary or how that even legal."
3. Pan down of US Department of Education signage
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Newman, Laid off U.S. Department of Education employee:
"Honestly, I mean, the biggest fear is that the, the children suffer greatly. I mean, I do believe we exist for a reason. I think there’s always room for improvement. But I, I’m afraid that the dollars that the schools and districts have been relying on are going to just not be there. And it’s one thing to phase out resources. It’s another thing to cut them off just without a plan. And that really makes me nervous for, for the kids. And, and it makes me really, really nervous for the kind of persistent inequities that we see across the country. I don’t see that getting better."
5. Signs with a STOP sign posted on entrance to DOE building
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Newman, Laid off U.S. Department of Education employee:
"I think there’s always room for improvement, but I don’t think that’s what this is about. If it if it were about that, we wouldn’t be destroying the system and then seeing where the dust settles, you know, you would be working I think hand in hand with the bureaucrats to figure out where, you know, there is room for improvement."
7. Group of protesters gathered outside DOE building, holding signs
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Newman, Laid off U.S. Department of Education employee:
"It’s a very uncertain time where I, you know, I don’t think anybody is super confident that there’s not going to be a continued impact on grant making."
9. Close of a sign showing the face of Elon Musk on a leash and reading "Leash the DOGE"
10. Various signs posted outside DOE building
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Newman, Laid off U.S. Department of Education employee:
"What is next? I truly have no idea. And that is a really, really unsettling feeling. My entire career has been this place. I, I stayed for a reason. I’m in public service for a reason. If I wanted to do data work, you know, somewhere else, I would, I think I would be doing that. But I specifically wanted to do it here and bring to life these, you know, kind of different stories, like the homeless children being served or the rural kids being served. I specifically wanted this and to have that taken away, it hurts."
12. Pan up of DOE signage
STORYLINE:
The Education Department plans to lay off more than 1,300 of its employees as part of an effort to halve the organization’s staff — a prelude to President Donald Trump’s plan to dismantle the agency.

Department officials announced the cuts Tuesday, raising questions about the agency’s ability to continue usual operations.

Sarah Newman was one of the employees affected by the layoffs.

"The biggest fear is that the children suffer greatly," Newman told the Associated Press Wednesday. "I’m afraid that the dollars that the schools and districts have been relying on are going to just not be there. And it’s one thing to phase out resources. It’s another thing to cut them off just without a plan."
