STORYLINE:
Pensioners and supporters of various football teams clashed with police on Wednesday during a protest in front of Argentina’s Congress against economic policies implemented by President Javier Milei’s government.

What began as a peaceful demonstration in Buenos Aires turned into clashes with police forces aiming a water cannon, tear gas and pellets at some of the protesters who were throwing stones at the authorities.

Protests by pensioners have been held every Wednesday in Buenos Aires for several weeks to complain about adjustments they say have made their standard of living more precarious. Until now, these demonstrations have gathered only a few dozen people and have had some incidents, including tear gas being thrown at the elderly, but have not seen anything on the scale of Wednesday’s demonstration.

The government of far-right President Javier Milei, who has been pursuing a policy of tightening public spending since he came to power a year and a half ago, had warned of restrictions on stadiums for those who rioted.

Milei decreed in March 2024 that pensions would be updated monthly on the basis of the latest available inflation data. Although the government managed to control inflation in one year, retirees complain that their incomes are always lagging behind because the new formula was implemented after the 50% devaluation of the local currency in December 2023.

In anticipation of a large gathering, Milei’s government tightened restrictions on attending Argentine football stadiums in an attempt to contain the protest.

In a resolution published on Wednesday, the Security Ministry included a reason to ban access to a football stadium to anyone who ‘has engaged in violent conduct against people or things or that affects security, vehicular traffic or public order, either individually or as part of a demonstration or congregation on the public highway or in places open to the general public, with or without movement, whatever its nature’.

This means that any fans involved in rioting on Wednesday will be barred from attending their team’s matches for a period of time to be set by the authorities.
