16. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Ying Chen, study author/Assistant Professor in Atmospheric Science at University of Birmingham:
"Our previous research finds that particulate matter in India have very high affinity to take up water, and this made us think, well, if the particles in the air start to pick up water then, of course, they will grow much larger. When we were sampling the particles to measure how much concentration it is, the particles need to go through a sample in that and the matter in that usually have a certain cut-off size. So if a lot of particles grow to a larger size, it cannot pass through. That can make our observation quite an underestimate of the real air pollution in India."
