STORYLINE:
A cautious calm was observed in Syria’s coastal areas Tuesday following days of sectarian violence that has fractured a country just coming out of a 14 year civil war.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said 1,130 people were killed in the clashes, including 830 civilians.
The U.N. Human Rights Office has documented the killing of 111 civilians so far, saying in a statement “the process of verification is ongoing, and the actual number of people killed is believed to be significantly higher.”
The Associated Press has not been able to independently verify the figure.
Sectarian violence broke out in the country following clashes between government-linked forces and groups associated with deposed President Bashar Assad.
Monitoring groups said hundreds of civilians were killed in revenge attacks in coastal communities, primarily targeting members of the Alawite religious minority to which Assad belongs.
In the city of Latakia, security forces set up checkpoints where people could retrieve some of their items that were looted during the carnage.
Hospitals around Latakia were overloaded with patients.
“Hospitals have been receiving casualties with all their on-duty staff, while the remaining staff are unable to reach the hospitals due to road closures caused by attempts to infiltrate and carry out roadside killings of civilians moving between villages," said Durid Rahmoun, Latakia’s Director of Health.
With a heavy presence of security forces, the city’s streets returned to calm.
Some hope that deal signed by interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa will bring more stability to the coast.
“We expect that with the SDF signing with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, there will unity. That is a good thing," said Latakia resident, Ammar Moala.
