"Axiom Space are about to launch their 4th mission. These are private astronaut missions which supplement the existing space station crew, but they do incredible research and the Axiom 5th or 6th mission would hopefully be an all UK mission, and that’s very exciting. It would include UK crew members, but also a UK science package and an incredible outreach program as well. Butch Wilmore and Sonny Williams launched into space on the Boeing Starliner, which was an experimental spacecraft, and they didn’t return to Earth on that spacecraft for safety reasons. And that’s a good decision when you look over the years at accidents and disasters that have happened in space. It’s good that we actually acknowledge the risk and we involve everybody in that risk making decision. We prepare for that contingency. You’re launched to space, expecting it to be perhaps a four month or a six month mission, knowing that it could end up being a 12 month mission. They’re not the first astronauts who’ve had their mission extended by 6 months, and that’s happened previously, so we’re all kind of ready for that contingency. Commercial space is accelerating. There’s a new space economy, if you like, and the model is changing from being driven by government agencies such as NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, to being driven by private companies, innovation and new technology and that’s very exciting because the cost of access to space is coming down incredibly rapidly. New technologies and innovation are advancing as well, so it is exciting times. But also, on the flip side of that, we need to make sure that we all explore space in a very sustainable way because anybody who’s involved in space wants to protect space for our future generations and also to reap the rewards of what space has to offer."

STORYLINE:
British astronaut Time Peake says he is looking forward to an all-UK space mission in the future.

The proposed flight would be operated by private company Axiom, which now employs the former ESA astronaut.

"Axiom Space are about to launch their 4th mission. These are private astronaut missions which supplement the existing space station crew, but they do incredible research and the Axiom 5th or 6th mission would hopefully be an all UK mission, and that’s very exciting. It would include UK crew members, but also a UK science package and an incredible outreach programme as well," Peake says.

SpaceX and Boeing are now ferrying astronauts and supplies between Earth and the space station.

And he is sure they would have been unruffled by the situation.
