STORYLINE:
As Pope Francis continued to recover from pneumonia, a group of pilgrims from Russia came to pray for him on Tuesday, gathering outside the Gemelli hospital where he was being treated.
The group, led by Archbishop Piero Pezzi of Mother of God church in Moscow, said rosary prayers as they gathered around the statue of Pope John Paul II in the hospital’s grounds.
They were originally scheduled to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican during the weekly audience as part of the Jubilee celebrations being held this year by the Catholic Church.
“We are coming here to Rome from Moscow to celebrate this Jubilee, and of course to pray for peace, to pray for hope, for health for everybody, and here we are to pray especially for the pope,” said Lisa Ivanova.
Doctors say the pontiff is no longer in imminent danger of death as a result of pneumonia.
However they are still cautious and have decided to keep him hospitalized for several more days to receive treatment, not to mention a period of rehabilitation he will likely need.
The 88-year-old pope was admitted to the Gemelli hospital on February 14.
