"Yes, the activity started to get much stronger. The eruptions were getting too big, the smoke, the fumaroles were all getting too big, so the agency where we work (Tropicana) started to evacuate at around 1:00 a.m. to be safer with the tourists, and start heading back down the volcano and all."

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Luis Guarcas, Tourism Guide:
"Well, from the experience we have of the Fire Volcano, you can expect almost anything, because of its activity, and then two months that it was dormant…well, we weren’t expecting that either, and it’s about being safe down here and waiting until the authorities give the all-clear to climb again.”

STORYLINE:
As Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire continues erupting, authorities have evacuated nearly 300 families while warning that another 30-thousand people in the area could be at risk.

The eruption started overnight with the volcano spewing gas and ash far into the sky Monday, leading authorities to close schools in the vicinity and a key road connecting communities.

Policemen and soldiers blocked the trails leading up to the volcano to prevent tourists from accessing the area.

The Fire Volcano and the nearby Acatenango Volcano are among the most visited tourist destinations in Guatemala.

30-year-old Luis Guarcas makes a living taking tourists up the slope of the volcano.

Early Monday morning the tourism agency he works for decided to evacuate tourists to lower and safer ground.

“The activity started to get much stronger. The eruptions were getting too big, the smoke, the fumaroles were all getting too big,” he said.

The biggest danger from the volcano are lahars, a mixture of ash, rock, mud and debris, that can bury entire towns.

The flow of volcanic material is weak to moderate but expected to increase, Guatemala’s disaster agency said early Monday.
