STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday urged the UK not to “stir up conflicts or create trouble” in the South China Sea after British Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned China’s “dangerous and destabilizing” acts in the disputed waters.

The UK was concerned about China’s moves, Lammy said a social media post after he visited the Philippines, which has been facing growing challenges posed by China’s increasing aggressiveness at sea recently.

“As a non-regional country, the UK should respect China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea and should not stir up conflicts or create trouble over regional disputes,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said when asked about the remarks at a daily news briefing.

Confrontations over the strategic waterway, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety, have spiked between Chinese and Philippine coast guard and navy forces in the last two years.

The long-seething territorial standoffs over the hotly-disputed shoals also involve Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Separately, Mao dismissed the 14th Dalai Lama’s statement that his successor will be born outside China, where he called “free world.”

“The reincarnation of living Buddhas, including the Dalai Lama, must comply with (China’s) national laws and regulations, follow religious rituals and historical conventions, and implement a practice of domestic search, drawing lots from the golden urn, and seeking approval from the central government for succession,” Mao insisted.

In his new book “Voice for the Voiceless," the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism said Tibet is still in the grip of repressive communist Chinese rule and that the campaign for the freedom of Tibetan people will continue even after his death.

Beijing accused the 14th Dalai Lama of seeking to separate Tibet from China and severed contact with his representatives since 2010.

Commenting on the Tuesday meeting between the US and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia aimed at ending the 3-year war, Mao restated the country’s support to “all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of the crisis.”
